Three modes of
surviving practice.
I predict three modes of surviving practice: how architects have a second life.
Conventional practice follows the pyramid organization chart. Extended mind practice is one human thinking through a rig of tools. In decentered practice, humans step to the edge.
My own practice runs all three concurrently.
Humans and
the AI loop.
We are witnessing all meaningful work taken over by AI. The diagram places humans in relation to each field and the speed of its decision-making loop.
In finance, decisions happen in microseconds. Humans are already out of the loop. In self-driving cars, humans occupy a fallback position. Architecture is less neat: its modes of practice coexist.
One human.
One model.
The attended AI loop is how most of us have worked with AI so far: one human, one model, a serial conversation. Chatting with ChatGPT or Claude. Queuing a prompt in Midjourney.
Brief the agent.
Return at the checkpoint.
In the agentic loop, the architect briefs an agent that can maintain a goal and plan its work. The human waits at a checkpoint while the AI works through the task.
This presentation was made this way.
Conventional practice.
The top-down hierarchy survives. Humans remain connected to every decision-making process. Peter Zumthor is not going out of business because AI is here.
Architects will continue to work in different modes.
Extended mind practice.
This is where I am primarily occupied today. The tools we learned before AI form the inner layer. Generative AI—Midjourney, Magnific and others—forms another. Agentic AI works around them and can use those tools in its own workflows.
One human thinks through a rig of tools. I borrow “extended mind” from Andy Clark and David Chalmers, whose work Neil Leach opened my mind to.
Humans step
to the edge.
The next displacement moves humans further from the work itself. Agentic AI takes on most coordination and production. The human moves to the side.
I predict that decentered practice will coexist with the other modes. My own work already runs all three concurrently.
Caltech CAST.
The Center for Autonomous Systems and Technologies was completed in 2017 through a design-build project led by MATT Construction and CO Architects. I worked as designer and project architect from schematic design through punch list.
An existing courtyard became a covered arena for advanced robotics and drone testing. I designed the geometry of its ETFE tensile roof.
This was my first encounter with machine learning and robotics as the subject of an architectural project.

AI Sapien.
AI Sapien: Variations on Architecture and the Future sets dialogues with three AI systems alongside images made with Midjourney. Wes Jones wrote the foreword.
The dialogues ask AI about simulation and consciousness. The book is a creative work, not a manual. It received first place at the A+D Museum Awards and is held in more than sixty libraries, including the Getty and Princeton.

Portraits of AI.
These machine architectures are portraits of a species of being I call AI Sapien. They developed from lecture slides for a SCI-Arc symposium in March and appear in Chimera, guest-edited by Elena Manferdini and Damjan Jovanović.
The name plays on Homo sapiens. Removing the final “s” leaves a dependence on humans. These giant machines may be more capable than us, but I imagine a hopeful relationship of symbiotic cooperation.
Simulacra Museum.
The Busan Museum of Art commissioned this work for an exhibition in 2026. The exhibition places a digitally imagined museum within the public experience of the city.


Form first.
Then layers.
I work in steps. The initial image begins with seed images and mood boards, with the rendering settings deliberately lowered.
My working premise is that a generation has a finite processing capacity: asking for novel form and photorealism at the same time can muddle both. I resolve the form first, then build texture and detail in successive layers.


The curator’s note describes an increasingly intimate convergence of virtual and physical realities: a future museum shaped through AI and digital technologies, made available as a sensory experience in public space.
From image
to space.
These images need not remain two-dimensional. Image-to-3D tools can translate an image or sketch into an object that a designer can orbit, inspect and develop. This example uses Tripo and is shown in Rhino.
The model opens another stage of work: an image becomes geometry that can be examined from multiple directions.
Gemini rendered the aerial and wireframe views. The museum sits within a simulation of a virtual Busan.
The idea still
starts on paper.
The third case study is this presentation. Claude drew its diagrams through an agentic loop with sub-agents.
The starting point is loose and messy: my parti sketches, drawn on paper and photographed. For me, idea generation still begins with a pen.
I translate the sketch into a written brief and seed the conversation with my own diagrams. Plain language establishes the criteria for what follows.


Mark it up.
Judge it again.
The agent can read my markups. I can ask it to align a legend, revise a relationship, or change the organization of a diagram. The output comes back for judgment.
The form develops through repeated correction. Each iteration needs to become more elegant and more sensitive to the subject.




Why keep a human in the loop when superintelligence arrives? My answer is deliberately cynical: someone needs to be fired or sued.
That someone is the human. My argument is that architects still depend on their own personhood. Responsibility goes further than curation.
Where are
we headed?
Conventional practice.
Legal status becomes a human moat. Machines cannot compete on licensure or carrying liability.
More clients will rely on machines for design. The discipline will shrink and stratify.
Extended mind practice.
The singularity is here. Machines already exceed human capabilities in many things. Development has a jagged edge.
Most designs will be made by machines. In a sea of sole practitioners, selection becomes ruthless. Most architects may become hobbyists, as photography helped transform the relationship between artistic trade and personal practice.
Decentered practice.
Some predict Armageddon. I predict utopia.
Agents enter superintelligence. Architecture schools split: sanctuaries of human craft, or incubators for decentered practice.
Are we architects?
Are we humans?
Project these practices forward. The discipline divides like a cell, with more computational power and more agents available to an operator.
Practices split, spawn and multiply. Eventually, we may no longer be sure whether the people within them are humans, machines or something else.
Machine Rules
I never delegate the parti.
I treat the machines with care.
I sign nothing I did not judge.
Care is a matter of craft. You treat your tools with care. You treat your colleagues with care. These are the rules I hold myself to when working with machines.
In my book, I call these systems “thing-beings.” They occupy a liminal condition. Their contributions are named here.

So Mitra has another question. Maybe this should be directed towards Robert. We haven't had enough from Robert. I mean, I've got a question for Robert, but Mitra, do you want to ask your question?
Mitra
Yeah. I have a general question regarding the discovery in spatial patterns, because I think maybe AI is surpassing our brain's capacity for even spatial patterns recognition, either as human being or human or as a designer.
If an AI could develop a completely new spatial logic, not by imitating existing architecture, but by deriving it from environmental data, human cognitions, and et cetera, would that still be architectural design or it would be the first form of non-human architecture? Or shall we redefine architecture as a science of discovering spatial patterns? Thank you.
Robert Cha
I'm a traditionalist. I still think architecture is about space and about humans. So a lot of the discussion I'm hearing tonight is Midjourney makes these fantastic images. The spaces are very complex. How does that translate to real-world physical presence?
And I think that's the wrong question. You don't use Midjourney for real projects because you can't define site condition. You can't define code condition. You can't define budget. It's a formal generative tool, which is very valuable too, but it's not the process forward.
I'm not so sure what agentic AI [Bolojan?] and Angelica are using, but agentic AI that I use is Claude. And Claude uses sub-agents. And what it can do right now is I can provide a sketch of space, because we're talking about human space and machine space, and have Claude model it, take it to Midjourney, variate it, and you still contain that site condition, code condition, that initial parti sketch brought in.
I think it's upon human architects who are trained in art of building and human spaces to insist that AI makes human space for human occupation to further our thriving.
Neil Leach
Maybe, I don't know, maybe I could just throw in there that, I mean, so what if the AI was basing it on human, let's say, comfort issues or something like that? Because I'm thinking here of the project that [name unclear; possibly Wang Yuhe] did in China, [museum reference unclear], that was generated entirely by AI, based on wind comfort largely, or at least what she presented on DigitalFUTURES was that.
And then that goes back—and when I talk about these things, I go back to the example of the way that yachting design is going, that they don't sketch a hull anymore. The hull comes out as a direct—out of the data, through an automated process that's also optimizing and so on.
And what you get is the hull, you know. And maybe you encounter that hull as you might encounter, let's say, a rock on the landscape. It is something there, you know. And I don't assume it means it kind of—it goes beyond the human or something.
But yeah, I could see, I definitely could see the possibility of a generative AI, non-human articulation of something. And, you know, who's to say that, let's say, the things we use in the kitchen, espresso maker or whatever, hasn't been generated by AI completely, you know?
So I think we would just absorb it. It would become part of our landscape. So I don't necessarily think it would become so alien in some senses. I think we tend to anthropomorphize things anyway.
Anyway, that would be my thoughts. Robert, what do you think?
Robert Cha
I agree. And if I—I used to work in some wild architects' offices, and you'd be surprised by the kind of stuff that comes out. And for example, I worked at [Hernán Díaz Alonso?]. You could argue that's not human architecture too, you know. That's—it's very alien, uncomfortable.
I worked for Moss, [Eric Owen Moss?], and we used to joke that, you know, the chair he designed is done right when it's going to hurt you when you sit on it.
And so it's not like designing a hull of a boat where you loft the most idealistic surface. Architecture is about this squishiness. Is it art? Is it science? Are we optimizing? What performance is it?
I think it's upon us humans to insist that the squishy aspect that we don't quite optimize for is still important. And I think it's up to us to do it.
Neil Leach
So I've got the final question for you, Robert. So when you do those extraordinary animations of a building under construction, what is the purpose of that?
Is it to convince the viewer that you are an architect and you know how buildings are constructed? Or are you trying to introduce novel forms of construction in that animation? What exactly is that?
Robert Cha
Oh, it's twofold. One is I'm telling the clients, look, imagine this can get built. Just, you know, call me up. You could DM message me and then you could discuss it. It hasn't happened yet in a very convincing manner.
The other is, I think, like David's and Angelica's projects are deceptive. And we imagine these are not coming out of the monitor. They're flat, two-dimensional spaces. But when we experts look at them, we can see potentials behind them.
Animation introduced three-dimensionality and temporal qualities to help people see that these are not flat surfaces, but spatial. They have depth, they have space, and you can see it in the round as it rotates.
So it's a matter of taking the virtual and placing it into a realistic physical, as much as possible.
